ABSTRACT

The Danish medieval laws: the laws of Scania, Zealand and Jutland contains translations of the four most important medieval Danish laws written in the vernacular. With law the land shall be built, but if each man would be content with his own and let others do the same, then one would not need any law. The law shall be honest and just; moderate, according to the customs of the land; suitable and useful and clear, so that all men can know and understand what the law says. The law shall not be made or written for any man's specific interest, but according to the necessity of all men who live in the land. And no man shall give judgment against the law given by the king and taken by the land, but according to that law the land shall be judged and justice done.
