ABSTRACT

This chapter immediately looks a little different than the majority of the collection, and it is probably correct to say that it absorbs rather than develops philosophical thought around the concept of vulnerability. It is offered as a contribution to understanding how conceptual issues need to be addressed when producing materials designed to have an impact at the level of policy and practice. It is also hopefully of interest in terms of demonstrating how (whether ‘correct’ or not) certain definitions of key concepts such as vulnerability can become very influential in particular settings. In turn, it is claimed that definitions and/or concepts may need to be challenged and possibly displaced in order to effect change.
