ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the landscape practice of foraging. It addresses its links with the related activities of hunting and gathering, as well as considering the place of foraging in both ancient human civilisations and the modern world. Foraging is discussed as both a response to privation and as a culinary/lifestyle choice that may also be enacted in a context of plenty. A survey of relevant literature spans practical guides as well as scholarly works on human foodways and culture. The chapter also encompasses a number of major works of literature and drama which contain notable references to foraging and foraged foods.
