ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses previous literature focusing on consumption practices and music. It describes the seven identified intersections between music listening and other mundane activities. The chapter presents the analysis and proposes a typology of activity intersections. It also offers some of transformation of music listening and how its intersection with other activities due to digitalization affects music listening. The chapter is based on extensive interviews with Swedish consumers concerning the digitalization of music consumption. It is difficult to ignore the development of music consumption when taking an interest in digitalization of consumer culture. In relation to other products and services, music digitalized early through the introduction of compact discs (CDs), continuing with MP3 files, (il)legal downloading and the current proliferation of streaming. One important difference among the respondents was whether music listening was private or a backdrop. Listening to music when hanging out involves many types of situations ranging from active forms of listening. Digital devices differentially affected these situations.
