ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the representations of nature of science (NOS) in the biology curriculum in Greece and in the respective textbooks. It is useful to provide some information about the Greek science education context. The chapter provides an overview of how Greek secondary biology textbooks present NOS aspects. It focuses on evolution (M3 Biology, and H3 Biology); and Mendelian genetics (M3 Biology, and HE3 Biology). Beyond that, the Greek case effectively illustrates an unfortunate global problem in science education research and practice. Teaching about scientific theories and models is at the core of science teaching all over the world, and students learn about scientific theories and their respective models in some detail. The relevant documents should be explicit about which NOS aspects should be taught along with the associated content throughout the curriculum. NOS aspects can emerge in every subject and they should be explicitly and reflectively discussed.
