ABSTRACT

If the "geistig side" is first created in the act of our rising to it, it seems to be something entirely subjective. But this is contradicted by the fact that the difference between Freud and Jung is primarily described as not merely a subjective one of the psychologists' different perspectives, their different ways of viewing. Grasping, explaining, and the question of the right terminology, the right theoretical framework are what counts when it is a question of the objective psyche. If one wants to grasp the specific meaning of German Geist in the sense that underlies the terms geistig and Geistigkeit as used in Jung's quotes, then "spirit" and "spirituality" must be kept away. Jung's "over and above" dimension and his emphasis on Geistigkeit really do not refer to the peaks of transcendence, but to the sphere of absolute negativity and generality opened up within the Real.
