China’s Role in Raising Tensions in the Asia–Pacific Region

Tensions rose significantly in the Asia-Pacific region in 2012, triggered primarily by China’s aggressive moves to assert its territorial and maritime claims vis-a`-vis a number of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries in the South China Sea and vis-a`-vis Japan over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, in the East China Sea.
