ABSTRACT

Andrew was the oldest child with a brother three years his junior. Andrew's Sandplay and related art activities took place over a two-year period, beginning in the fifth grade and ending near the end of sixth grade. Andrew's symptoms and behaviors were those of a child on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, however this was not diagnosed earlier in his development. Andrew presented as a gentle but guarded child. The Sandplay and the art provided Andrew the language, the means to effect this fundamental transformation. Allowing his hands to guide his work, Andrew unknowingly extricated his ego from its unconscious state. Andrew cannot live by instinct of the homies, alone – it is too scary and too unconscious. During the final months of his Sandplay process, Andrew created what the author call the "Dragon-Warrior" tray. Andrew remained with the author until his graduation, choosing to see him monthly in his final high school years.
