ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of issues involved in various kinds of paternalistic lying and deception. Situating paternalistic lies within a broad category of altruistic lies, the chapter explores the extent to which the kind of interference standardly associated with paternalism is a necessary component of paternalistic lying and how it may be understood in cases where interference is a factor. The chapter suggests that paternalistic lying does not necessarily involve deception, and finishes with a broad discussion of paternalistic lying in relation to some different ethical views.
