ABSTRACT
This chapter describes some of the consequences of the anthropological rejection of order. It addresses a change in the way that anthropologists approached the Native's Point of View. This change is important, for it helps to clarify some of the intellectual implications of the Cultural Turn that was an important part of the foundation of postmodern anthropology. That Turn was foreshadowed in the work of David Schneider, but was associated especially with the work of Clifford Geertz, and the chapter devotes substantial attention to his view of what anthropology ought to be. It describes some of the ways that anthropologists ended up reacting to Geertz's approach to the world and his view of the discipline, a reaction that was an important part of neoliberal anthropology. Geertz is an important figure in American anthropology and intellectual life more generally in the last third of the twentieth century.
