ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of assessment measures for anxiety that are compatible with a primary care model. It focuses on commonly used measures of anxiety that have demonstrated usefulness in a primary care setting. The chapter also focuses on the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaire, and on three additional measures that are appropriate for a primary care setting and offer unique aspects to screening for anxiety. They include including the Overall Anxiety and Severity and Impairment Scale, the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-Anxiety Test Bank, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory-Primary Care. The chapter explores that GAD-7 may be less sensitive to social anxiety and avoidance symptoms. It discusses the brief form of the instrument, which has been developed for primary care settings. The chapter examines many different assessment tools in depth to aid the provider with the challenges in identifying and diagnosing GAD among other anxiety disorders in primary care settings.
