ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the affordances and uses of screen capture technology (SCT) in teacher education. SCT is widely used in education as it is a versatile tool that has a broad range of uses. A lot of the content in MOOCS, flipped classroom courses and online courses is produced using SCT but it is now also widely used for feedback, reflection and assessment. In more recent years it has been introduced into teacher education where it is impacting on both the work of the teacher trainer as well as the teacher trainee.

Screen capture technology allows the user to record the screen of their computer as if a video camera was pointing at the computer screen. Whatever the user does on the screen and the user’s voice are both recorded by the screen capture software (SCS). What’s more the technology is cheap to buy and simple to use.

The aim of this chapter is to help readers build a clear understanding of the range of ways that screen capture is being used in teacher education. It highlights some of the key research and focuses on a number of case studies and practical examples. Readers will build a picture of a versatile and flexible tool that can be used by both teacher trainers and teacher trainees. The chapter also looks at some of the SCT tools available from free tools to sophisticated tools that offer a variety of affordances.
