ABSTRACT

This chapter will look at the development and maintenance of an Enabling Environment within a high secure personality disorder treatment service. The Westgate unit, underpinned by the treatment principles of the Chromis programme, provides a whole regime approach to managing and supporting the reduction of risk for complex high risk male offenders with high levels of psychopathic traits and other personality disorders. This chapter will briefly outline the unit and the population. It will then explain the principles and the learning over the last ten years specifically related to creating an enabling environment for this population. It will include information from interviews with participants regarding what factors they believed made an environment ‘enabling’ and suggest areas for further development and investigation.
