ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the current literature surrounding social therapy, and considers environments for maximising the uptake of elements that make up the transformative process. It incorporates notions of group and community engagement, and the propagation of anti-abusive values in a circumscribed and immediate context. In doing so, the authors apply their research, practice and managerial experience in establishing and maintaining prison-based therapeutic communities. They consider how the dynamics and processes of these settings can be harnessed in a productive and recursive relationship with a context that invites the adoption of values intended to establish and reinforce the rehabilitative project.
