ABSTRACT

Nidotherapy is a collaborative empirical treatment that examines every component of the environment to determine what changes might be made to effect a better fit for a person, be they a psychiatric patient, an offender or just an ordinary citizen. It has been in existence for 20 years and is now beginning to be accepted as much more than a common sense approach to mental illness. In this chapter the essential principles of nidotherapy, its components, and its efficacy, will all be described and illustrated with a detailed single case example demonstrating its differences from other therapies. Finally, efficacy studies are described to show where it is on the evidence-based pathway.
