The extraction of natural resources may have significant social, cultural and environmental impacts on the local community. In Greenland, permissions for mining are granted on the basis of concession agreements, and in this connection the responsibility of the private party vis-à-vis the local community on social, cultural and environmental matters – the side effects of an investment project – is addressed legally. In an attempt to regulate the socio-economic impact of an investment project, so-called impact benefit agreements (IBAs)1 are concluded. These agreements are addressed in this chapter.
