ABSTRACT

Fijians have been dancing for communal, spiritual and customary reasons for centuries. Tucked away amid the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, Fijians have been performing meke, a traditional dance that passes on knowledge and genealogies. The contexts and reasons for dancing, the costuming, and the meke movements may differ across Fijian Islands; but Fijians are all similar in that they all need, want and will come together to dance the meke.
