Developing Global Leaders,

Most CEOs consider foreign markets to be a key factor in their company’s future success. Moreover, a growing number of these same CEOs believe that developing global leaders must be an integral part of their long-term strategic planning. People with global perspectives and work experiences have an ability to work in and across multiple cultural worlds. The following statements are descriptions of a typical day in the lives of a global leader and their views of the skills required for their roles:

• “I want to find out how things can be improved (in my firm’s European operations). I have to be very tactful or else everyone will get defensive. It’s not helpful if you don’t act tactfully. In my job you can lose friends. You can’t say that you know it all. The acid test is that we are still friends.”
