The significance of the clinician’s felt experience

Using attachment theory to understand the therapist’s emotional experience when working with someone with psychosis
WithMark Linington

This chapter highlights the importance of considering the mental health worker’s own attachment experiences and how these play out in therapeutic encounters. I provide a case vignette from my own clinical practice, which illustrates how my own attachment history shaped therapy with a client with psychosis and how I managed the consequent emotional and behavioural responses.
