ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about Dr. Irene Cairo's initial description of the sequencing of the treatment given to Babette. It includes some identifying personal facts about the patient, which is followed by some early patient history including two early traumas and the beginning of a symptom, that of stammering, plus some analyst thoughts. The treatment that spanned many years with many interruptions. Dr. Cairo hoped that the patient would have one more interruption and then a treatment with some other analyst. The stammering, which began following the first trauma, suggests that the symptom, which had played a role in her life for a long time, was well ingrained and habitual. Also, the stammering proved useful as a concrete element of pain presented to the father so that he would agree to this treatment. Turning to the two traumas, this chapter provides many aspects that could create serious traumatic reactions.
