ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes on "finding unconscious fantasy", while involving work with both metaphor and the unsymbolized, is implicitly also about how to transform pain into psychic suffering and bring the unsymbolized into a symbolizing process. The centrality of finding unconscious fantasy in psychoanalysis is closely linked with understanding of the workings of therapeutic action. The process of finding unconscious fantasy is embedded in the analytic dyad and occurs at its interface. Connectivity, having contact, coming to know the nature of the contact, becomes the means of discovery and creation. The finding of unconscious fantasy is closely linked to the creation of therapeutic action in instances of trauma and somatic expression when the metaphorical process is frozen in a concrete state of immobility. The finding of unconscious fantasy allows for a depth of meaning that brings an enlivening to internal processes.
