ABSTRACT

In this chapter we summarize culturally relevant literature applicable to group work with children from age 5 years through late adolescence. We will provide a rationale for using group work with children and adolescents, and will infuse literature addressing cultural considerations with this population. The central focus of this chapter is to identify for practitioners some of the numerous factors affecting young clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Next, we present suggestions for how therapists can foster culturally adaptive ideas and techniques. To illustrate the application of these ideas, we take liberty to describe various aspects of group development and suggest group leader techniques. Finally, we offer personal reflections and examples from group sessions to illustrate these ideas.
