ABSTRACT

Social work and social welfare doctoral programs are the incubators for the next generation of educators and scholars in the profession (Liechty, Liao, & Schull, 2009; Stoesz, Karger, & Carrilio, 2010). One aspect of this task is helping these students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to function competently as part of the academic community (Spring, 2010).

Activities of members of this community involve two major componentsthe generation of new knowledge in one’s discipline by conducting research, and the education of the next generation of members of the profession. To maintain these two foci, the German philosopher Wilhelm Freiherr von Humboldt (1767-1835) advocated for the unity of research and education as the ideal and the involvement of teachers in higher education institutions in research and teaching as interconnected (Kornbeck, 2007).
