ABSTRACT

In September 2009, a mandatory new course called Writing for Publication was introduced into our Faculty of Social Work’s doctoral curriculum. Its primary purpose was to support PhD students in preparing and submitting publishable papers. Our experiences with faculty hiring in recent years had shown us that applicants for positions in our faculty often had multiple

publications in refereed journals, despite having just completed their PhD, or even having ABD status. We had also recognized that writing skills among all our students-MSW and PhD-generally were not at the level required for publication and were well aware that this was not unique to us. Having now offered the Writing for Publication course for five years, we set out to learn whether it has been fulfilling its mission and, if so, what modifications might be warranted.
