Interstitial housing space: no centre just borders

ByWENDY STEELE, CATHY KEYS

The informal and taken-for-granted spaces in the margins of housing present a vital site for the creation, maintenance and preservation of the house/ home. This chapter reconceptualises housing/home in relation to interstitial space, highlighting the ways that such spaces perform multiple roles in sustaining the continuity of dwelling against everyday social and ecological uncertainties. Our intersection with the book’s overarching theme of housing and home unbound is an exploration of interstitial space as a site of indeterminacy through which the boundaries of housing/home are unsettled.
