ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how researchers can use a variety of media outlets to augment their outreach efforts, and how social media more generally can be integrated into their research profiles. It describes research dissemination and situates this discussion within the broader theme of language in the public eye. The chapter considers the extent to which traditional mass media constructs specific language ideologies, focusing on media coverage of "vocal fry" in the United States. It outlines different methods of research dissemination, focusing on traditional mass media and social media. The chapter examines how social media enables the development of counter-narratives which run contrary to established ideologies of language use, and how the effective use of social media can help disrupt the "language news cycle". It presents a case study on creaky voice which sheds light on how sociolinguistic knowledge is used in language-related news stories.
