ABSTRACT

This chapter finds ways to reduce workplace violence (WPV) by increasing workplace safety and security at both the organisational and interpersonal levels. Safety and security are necessary and fundamental to the restoration of competence for clients in forensic settings. Behaviour Based Safety is a comprehensive approach that stresses the measurement of positive, replacement behaviours that decrease risk by increasing safety-related behaviours within the organisation. According to Squires, Moralejo, and LeFort, when policies are clearly written, with a linkage between policy and practice, it is easier to understand the policy and to implement the procedures in ways that are consistent with regulatory expectations for safety. Culture change can provide the foundation for the implementation of programmes and therapies to address mental health concerns, while providing safety and security to all. Clients and staff alike can then begin to experience healing from the sense of being wounded that permeates the forensic mental health system.
