ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what multilingualism and media can be and how they interact in what circumstances and at what levels needs precise theoretical and empirical approaches. It discusses the state of research can be overcome by inclusive analyses and shows that reach beyond established research habits and ideologies. Parallel with the top-down frames of the official languages, however, bottom-up debates about the use of linguistic varieties such as dialects have continued, strengthening the case for internal multilingualism despite national language policies. The chapter discusses the paradigmatic, the syntagmatic, and the contextual dimensions of multilingualism and media. In all three dimensions and throughout their levels, principles of enablement and constraint apply. From a professional perspective, empirically grounded advice about how to solve problems of multilingualism and media might be useful to practitioners.
