Fictional World-Building as Ritual, Drama, and Medium

ByLily Alexander

This essay examines fictional world-building (FWB) as a ritual, drama, and medium. In these capacities, FWB comes across as a timeless network, embracing the past, present, and future of culture. As part of the ritual-mythological system, it is linked to the past, safeguarding the continuity of human culture. As a drama, FWB reacts to the urgent need of societies to monitor looming crises. As a medium, it delivers a “bridge to the future,” directing us toward unforeseen possibilities and solutions to the problems of our peaceful coexistence as a species.
