L. Frank Baum’s A New Wonderland: The Beginning of It All

ByMichael O. Riley

A New Wonderland is the “lost book” in L. Frank Baum’s fantasy canon, which is unfortunate because it is also the basic book needed for a full understanding of the evolution of his creative imagination. However, an unlucky combination of circumstances affecting its composition, publication, and subsequent revision resulted in subordinating A New Wonderland to Baum’s other fantasies, just as they later became subservient to Oz, his supreme creation.
