ABSTRACT

The military is a large organization, composed of five major divisions: US Army, US Air Force, US Navy, US Marines and US Coast Guard. Most military members have a minimum of a high school diploma and come from diverse backgrounds. Ever since the draft was discontinued post-Vietnam War in 1973, the American military has remained an all-volunteer force. The military by nature has its own unique culture, language and customs. Military service has traditionally been seen as a male role, but since establishment of an all-volunteer force in 1972, equal opportunity has allowed women to have more opportunities in the military services. The demands of the military lifestyle create unique challenges for the military family. Military spouses are said to hold a "keystone role" in establishing a healthy home environment. The military child has gained increasing attention over the past years, as awareness has been raised regarding the impact of deployment on children's health and well-being.
