ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the main challenges and complexities involved in managing multiple roles and multiple relationships when combining didactic instruction and leading an experiential group in a university setting. Including both didactic and experiential group learning requires a high level of professionalism and awareness of the complexities involved on the part of instructors. It is of paramount importance that group work educators are aware of the potential benefits and risks inherent in multiple roles and multiple relationships in teaching experiential group courses, primarily due to the fact that the instruction role includes students’ evaluation. It is important that faculty effectively communicate and discuss these potential benefits and risks to their students, and that they acquire the necessary competence to navigate these roles and relationships in a manner that is ethical and enhances their students’ personal and professional development.
