ABSTRACT

Disability and/or the frailty of old age at times puts people in need of help with intimate care in their homes, i.e. with activities such as dressing and undressing (underwear), using the toilet, changing incontinence pads, bathing and showering, washing intimate parts of the body and changing sanitary towels and tampons (cf. Carnaby & Cambridge, 2006, p. 20). That the provision and performance of intimate care are a challenge for the recipient of care as well as the care worker is well recognised both in terms of how to perform the care and how to manage feelings such as anxiety and embarrassment (Andersson, 2007, pp. 152-156; Clark, 2009; Menzies, (1970/1977); Sörensdotter, 2008, pp. 230-236; Twigg, 2000).
