ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of some of the major themes that therapists may want to consider when working with a couple facing fertility problems or pregnancy loss. It discusses the effect of fertility problems and pregnancy loss on relationships collectively. Differences between coping styles are often at the core of relationship problems. In the face of fertility problems or pregnancy loss, emotions are often very intense. Thus, beyond any issues of "match" between partners, feelings of blame, guilt, or shame may additionally contribute to relationship distress. It is common for couples to present for therapy when differences between them reach an impasse. The crucial therapeutic task is to create an environment of validation and empathy, thereby providing a safe and supportive place for the couple to make sense of their losses and process their grief. By connecting couples with other appropriate supportive resources, couples' therapy can be an invaluable aid for couples experiencing a bumpy path to parenthood.
