I argue that the marginalization of those labeled as “conspiracy theorists” in our culture is analogous to the medieval persecution of those labeled as “heretics,” and that the role of psychologists in this marginalization is analogous to the Inquisition. There is a disturbing history of psychologists and psychiatrists pathologizing marginalized political views and there is abundant evidence from the psychology literature on conspiracy theories that history is in danger of repeating itself.
