ABSTRACT

Creating a shared vision of a sustainable and desirable future is the most critical task facing humanity. The concept of sustainable development arose as a contrast with traditional development founded upon a program of economic growth. The functioning of markets and trading systems can be strengthened by increasing public and private investment in them as part of fostering sustainable agriculture, land management and rural development. The Sustainable Development Goals and targets are integrated and indivisible, global in nature and universally applicable, taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities. Land resource management, in its narrowest sense, is the actual practice of using land by local human populations in a sustainable way. The economic and social significance of good land management is well recognized. Soil, particularly its contribution to economic growth, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture and food security, eradicating poverty, women’s empowerment, addressing climate change and improving water availability, is vitally important.
