ABSTRACT

The achievement of land degradation neutrality, whereby land degradation is either avoided or offset by land restoration. Promoting the Zero net land degradation target would secure the currently available productive land for the use of present and future generations. China has been continuously fighting land degradation since the 1950s through various ecological restoration policies. China and another 46 countries adopted the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Paris on 17 June 1994. Monitoring of the status and dynamics of land desertification and sandification is the fundamental work for combating desertification of China. China is committed to go beyond the “land-degradation neutral” objective. The strategic goal of China is that the desertified land caused by human activity will be returned to pre-destroyed status by 2050. Desertification and land degradation cause poverty and hunger, undermining the living environment, triggering social conflict and hindering sustainable development.
