ABSTRACT
Bhutan is located in the Eastern Himalayas, landlocked between India to its west, south and east, and by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China to its north. Di cult mountainous terrain as well as a deliberate policy of isolation meant that it had virtually no contact with the rest of the world except Himalayan neighbours until the second half of the twentieth century. It was never colonized.
