ABSTRACT

This chapter provides different approaches regarding how to use social media technology and cultural competency to overcome cultural barriers to learning and understanding. In today's world, the use of social media tools can influence education, society, and the global community by providing users with enhanced skills to create and share information. Cultural competency emerged out of the movement of multicultural education. Social media and cultural competency have the ability to go hand in hand when it comes to communication. The goal of data collection was to find all empirical studies including quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and literature reviews including theories regarding the integration of cultural competency and social media since inception. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory explores how technological advancements as well as innovative ideas through social media use can spread throughout a networking group in the global community thus allowing people to share ideas and multicultural awareness.
