ABSTRACT

Knowledge-building is a well-established theoretical approach to learning that privileges creation over consumption. The development of digital and mobile technologies empowers learners with considerable agency to capture and construct meaning in a multimodal manner that fulfils many of the principles behind knowledge-building. However, this is not yet a widely recognised or used pedagogical strategy in schools and especially in teacher education, where pre-service teachers are seldom provided with opportunities to create original knowledge, building upon the work of previous cohorts, or to share and receive critical feedback from the wider public. This chapter explores how early years pre-service teachers might use mobile technologies and apps, like Book Creator and Puppet Pals, to enact meaning - ful knowledge-building strategies. It concludes with a summary of implications for teacher educators preparing pre-service teachers.
