According to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), if a copyright owner asked YouTube to pull an unauthorized mashup, the creator could get it reinstated with a counter-notification explaining why the mashup qualifies as fair use. YouTube had made a private deal with Universal Music Group, giving them the power to take down any video involving their music, fairly used or not. The author have fought for his copyrights. Reviewing the submission guidelines for his Masters thesis, it shocked that rule number 88 of the Graduate School Guidelines for Master Theses required to secure permission from the copyright holders of any commercial images. The Graduate School policy presented a serious hindrance to his intellectual freedom. Perhaps he was being too literal in his interpretation of Pearson policy, but his requests for clarification went unanswered. So, in the end, the author refused to sign the author agreement and, ultimately, withdrew his chapter from the volume.
