ABSTRACT

International migration has been closely related to aspirations of economic and social upward mobility the world over. Among several other states, Gujarat has a long history of international migration. The chapter provides an historical perspective of international migration from Gujarat, followed by an overview of international migration from Gujarat, and mappings of transnational flows into Gujarat. It presents patterns of transnational flows in general and in relation to the duration of emigration. The chapter presents some scenarios of emigration rate by districts and rural-urban divide in Gujarat. Transnational flows towards religious institutions is bound to be biased towards Hindus for having vast Gujarati Hindu diaspora in the west who find it easier to donate than the Gujarat Muslim diaspora in the Gulf, due to the income differential. Gujarat is very distinctive in receiving transnational flows in terms of philanthropy, social remittance, receiving gifts, and spending at the time of native visit.
