ABSTRACT

The focus in this chapter is on the assessment of children (i.e., those between the ages of 7 and 14). Obviously, any model of children’s development requires quality measures to enable valid examination. However, assessment of children involves different issues than are salient to the assessment of adolescents and adults. A goal of this chapter is to present an explication of the unique characteristics associated with valid assessment of children. Given the career development context of this book, we will focus specifically on the assessment of interests, self-efficacy, general aspects of career development, and personality traits as these are the most salient. These all play central roles in the career development literature, and our focus is on their assessment so as to inform our theories of career development. The issues involved in each, as well as representative measures, will be presented.
