ABSTRACT

Oil-rich Brunei, formally known as Brunei Darussalam or “the Abode of Peace,” is a compact and prosperous Muslim sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo. Without the monumental ancient architecture found elsewhere in Southeast Asia, it has to date had little opportunity to play a signicant role in regional architectural conservation. A strong centralized government, popular wealth and a comparatively harmonious relationship with its British colonial past might bring to mind comparisons to nearby Singapore, but there are important dierences. Brunei’s population is small, its architectural patrimony is relatively young, and it is much less internationally engaged.
