ABSTRACT

Jonathan Jansen was the vice-chancellor and rector of the University of the Free State (UFS) from October 2009 to August 2016. He is a household name in South Africa and an internationally renowned scholar and educational leader. Professor Jansen was the first black dean at the University of Pretoria, wrote a book about his experience called Knowledge in the Blood (2009), and writes a column for The Times , a leading national English-language newspaper in South Africa. Some of his columns were collected into two best-selling books, We Need to Talk (2011) and We Need to Act (2013), in which Professor Jansen sought to ignite and influence public discussion of issues such as education, leadership, and race relations and to inspire hope and citizen action.
