ABSTRACT

In 2001, I  published a book with a title similar to this one:  not Island Geographies, rather A Geography of Islands (Royle, 2001). It was my first full-length single-authored monograph and thus of considerable importance to my future ennoblement at Queen’s University Belfast as the world’s only (or hopefully, first) Professor of Island Geography  – although Godfrey Baldacchino already then held a broader title of Professor of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), Canada. (He is now Professor of Sociology at the University of Malta, though maintaining links to UPEI.) Maybe the book also played a role in the development of island geography and island studies for it has been often cited and still sells, I am glad to report.
