ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses evidence-based factors associated with the diagnosis and prognosis of concussions and discusses ways to further evaluate, treat and rehabilitate those with concussion to improve outcomes and help ensure safe and timely return to academics, work and play. Recent scientific papers, including the Consensus statement on concussion in sport: the 4th International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich, and the American Academy of Neurology's Evaluation and management of concussion in sports, have highlighted these issues and sparked interest in concussions. Increased knowledge about the serious short-term and long-term effects resulting from concussions has peaked interest in improved strategies for diagnosis, evaluation and rehabilitation. Continued research should uncover new insights in concussion diagnosis, and evaluation and rehabilitation will lead to a continuing evolution and improvement of care. In order to assess progress, the use of the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT 3) on the sidelines or after the game is recommended.
