ABSTRACT

This review focuses on full sized soccer matches to retain the full complexity of the game. By collecting and analyzing the positional data from multiple players, it defines their tactical behavior while even taking the ball into consideration. The aim of this review was to give an overview of the literature using positional data of full sized high-level soccer matches to analyze tactical behavior. In order to reflect on the content of the studies included, they were grouped into collecting positional data, intra-team behavior, pattern recognition and inter-team behavior. The articles included in this review were discussed in the way the positional data was used. It becomes clear that the studies in this review seem to originate from different scientific disciplines. When reviewing tactical behavior based on positional data in soccer matches, it can be concluded that the data is accurate and can be used to analyze team behavior and recognize patterns.
