ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on high intensity intermittent repeated sprint performance. It also investigates the effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on recovery following a standardised bout of high intensity intermittent exercise. The modulatory physiological effect by nitrate may be overridden by emergency reactions during maximal or near maximal work, which seems to be apparent during the protocol used within the current investigation. An additional research interest in the current investigation was the recovery following the set bout of repeated sprint protocol (RSP). Finally, the chapter concludes that NO3 gels supplementation had no positive impact on any of the physiological measures during the exercise bouts or during the recovery period in the current investigation. Due to the lack of physiological change, no performance enhancements were observed following the high intensity repeated sprint performance component of the protocol and recovery was unaffected.
