Luckily, there are myriad tools and strategies at your disposal to
help you and your editor become partners in storytelling rather than
scavengers hunting for missing shots.
I consider the editorial process to be a team event. The editor is the
team captain, and brings his or her vision and skills to the story. As
producer, I’m the team manager, so I have to keep the big picture in
mind-deadlines, budgets, personalities, and why we’re doing this
story. But I need to let the editor bring something new to the creative
process. An editor often brings a dose of reality to the story develop-
ment process. They will say that a particular shot is just not working.
Whereas we producers can often fall in love with a shot because we
know just how much effort it took to make it happen.
